The 4th Annual Meeting of the Specialty Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine

The 4th Annual Meeting of the Specialty Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies cum the Cross-Strait Forum on Advanced Research on Treatment of Rheumatism with Chinese Medicine has been held in Nanjing.


In Nov. 2 to 4, 2017, the 4th Annual Meeting of the Specialty Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies cum the Cross-Strait Forum on Advanced Research on Treatment of Rheumatism with Chinese Medicine has been successfully held in Novotel Nanjing East Suning Galaxy Hotel, Nanjing, China. Sang Bin-sheng, vice president and secretary general of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, Pan Yi, former vice president of Nanjing University and deputy director of the University Affairs Committee, Professor Chen Wan-jun, the National Institutes of Health, Professor Thomas Efferth, chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology, Institute of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Mainz Germany, Professor Lam Kong Peng , executive director of the Bioprocessing Technology Institute, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore, Professor Lv Li-wei, department of Pathology, the University of Hong Kong, Zhu Xuan-xuan, vice chairman and secretary general of Jiangsu Pharmacological Society, Zhang Miao-jia, director of the Department of Rheumatology, Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital, Xu Qiang, vice chairman and secretary general of the Specialty Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and vice president of Life Sciences, Nanjing University, Professor Liu Liang, chairman of the Specialty Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, director of the Cross-strait Scientific Collaboration Center for Chinese Medicine and president of Macau University of Science and Technology, and Jiang Zhi-hong, vice chairman of the Specialty Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology served as officiating guests at the opening ceremony and attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Nearly 300 experts and scholars from China, the United States, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macao attended the opening ceremony and academic conferences to discuss the unique theories of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of rheumatism, immune-related diseases and cancer research, as well as the latest progress in drug development and results.

Officiating guests cut the ribbon for the opening ceremony

The opening ceremony was held on the morning of November 3. Sang Bin Sheng, the vice chairman and secretary-general of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, first delivered a welcoming address. He reviewed the history of the establishment of the specialty committee, expressed admiration for the work done by the specialty committee in promoting academic exchanges and cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine immunology and in promoting the development of Chinese medicine immunology and developing membership in the past year. He also affirmed the work of the specialty committee, and gave highly praise for the long-term efforts and acquisitions made by the team of State Key Laboratories of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines under the leadership of Professor Liu Liang in research methods, technologies, standards and products of Chinese medicine anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis proprietary Chinese medicines research and development. Then he praised the immunization specialty committee as an example of the integration of traditional Chinese and western medicine and an example of international and academic expression. He also encouraged this committee to continue to play the role as a link between immunization professionals in various countries and regions. It should actively carry out academic exchanges and cooperation in immunization of Chinese medicine, promote and share scientific research results, accelerate the improvement and development of Chinese medicine immunology and organize related standards for research and development to promote the academic progress of Chinese medicine and make new contributions to public health.

Pan Yi, former vice president of Nanjing University and deputy director of the University Affairs Commitee welcomed the guests and wished this meeting a success. He introduced the work and achievements of Nanjing University in Chinese medicine education and scientific research. He said Nanjing University has been committed to medical education and research. With the support of the state, the university has established the State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. He said immune disease is one of their focus research directions. He also admired Professor Liu Liang for his achievements in TCM immunization, as well as the positive role in promoting and supporting the exchange and development of Chinese medicine immunology made by the special committee.

Speech by Pan Yi, vice president of Nanjing University and vice director of University Affairs Committee

Professor Liu Liang gave a speech at the opening ceremony. He expressed gratitude for the full support from Macao Foundation, Macau Science and Technology Development Fund, Hunan Zhengqing Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., Qingfeng Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. and Simcere. He also appreciated the co-hosts from State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology of Nanjing University and the Jiangsu Provincial Pharmacology Association. On behalf of the organizing committee, the specialty committee and the Macao University of Science and Technology, he extended a warm welcome to all the guests. He introduced some achievements made by the specialty committees through collaborative innovation. They made a breakthrough in the discovery of serum IgG sugar chain 2 sulfonate N-glycan markers combination which can accurately diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. They have successfully designed the world’s first piece of TiO2-PGC chip. They also found sinomenine can specifically inhibit the expression of microsomal prostaglandin synthase 1 in macrophages to exert high efficiency and low toxicity of anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects, said Professor Liu Liang, adding that sinomenine is the first clinical drug found to inhibit this enzyme. He appreciated the achievements made by members of the specialty committee in the past year and thanked them for their strong support for the work of the specialty committee. Finally, Professor Liu Liang announced that the academic annual conferences 2018 to 2021 will be held in Nanning, Guangxi, Tianjin, Huaihua, Hunan and Chongqing respectively and acknowledged the organizers.

The conference invited Professor Chen Wan-jun, Professor Thomas Efferth, Professor Lam Kong Peng, Professor Lv Li-wei, Professor Zhang Miao-jia and Professor Liu Liang to do the conference reports. Professor Chen Wan-jun introduced regulatory T cell immune tolerance and immunotherapy. Professor Thomas Efferth presented the antiviral activity of artemisinin and its derivatives, and exploration of the mechanism of action of artemisinin. Professor Lam Kong Peng reported on the production of interferon and the relevance of traditional Chinese medicine. Professor Lv Li-wei discussed the role of Th17 cells in the pathogenesis of Sjogren’s syndrome. Professor Zhang Miao-jia gave a speech on the pathogenesis and clinical study of western medicine igoramide in rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Liu Liang presented a new strategy for regulating lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota in Chinese and Western medicine as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The conference also invited 28 experts in biomedicine, rheumatology, Chinese medicine, immunology, oncology to make special academic reports which mainly focus on the development and application of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of rheumatism, the progress of TCM diagnosis and treatment of rheumatism, the integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine of rheumatism, and the frontier academic problems such as TCM treatment of tumors. Many Chinese and foreign experts discussed the progress and new directions in related fields at the meeting.

 

On the night of November 2, the specialty committee held the 4th council meeting of the first session. The meeting was presided by Zhou hua, deputy secretary general of the specialty committee. Professor Xu Qiang, Professor Thomas Efferth, Professor Lv Li-Wei, Professor Fang Yong-fei, Dr. Wu Fei-chi, Professor Zhu Yi-zhun, Professor Jiang Zhi-hong, Assistant Professor Fan Xing-xing and Professor Leng Jing spoke one after another. Professor Liu Liang finally made a summary. The meeting reviewed and approved the work report of the specialty committee in the past year, and it elected the venues and organizations of 2019 ~ 2021 academic annual meeting.

On November 4, some delegates visited the State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Nanjing University. The visitors expressed their heartfelt admiration for the lean and efficient talent team and the many high-level achievements in the fields in phenotypic analysis and disease mechanism, genetic mutation and animal models, genetic regulation of environmental stress and confinement, drug testing and drug carriers, drug targets and drug substance and so on. It also had a heated discussion about the equipment standard management system of laboratory automation.
